Detailed answer to the quiz question
Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers southwest of Lisbon and about 600 kilometers west of the Moroccan coast. It belongs politically to Portugal and, together with the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands and the Canary Islands, forms the Macronesian Islands.
The archipelago consists mainly of two inhabited islands: Madeira, the main island, and Porto Santo. There are also some uninhabited island groups, the Desertas Islands and the Ilhas Selvagens (Wild Islands).
The capital of Madeira is Funchal, located on the south coast of the main island. Funchal is known for its historic architecture, botanical gardens and markets. The city also serves as the cultural and economic center of the island.
Madeira is of volcanic origin and is characterized by its dramatic landscape, which includes high mountains, deep gorges and lush vegetation. The mild subtropical climate makes Madeira a popular destination all year round. The island offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, especially on the famous levadas (irrigation channels), paragliding, diving and whale watching.
Madeira is also known for its wine, Madeira Wine, and its rich culture, which is reflected in traditional festivals, music and cuisine. The islands have a long history dating back to the 15th century, when they were discovered and colonized by Portuguese sailors.
