During the Trojan War, the Greeks besieged the city of Troy for years but were unable to conquer it. Finally, Odysseus devised a plan to build a large wooden horse with the best warriors hidden inside. The Greeks pretended to leave, but left the horse behind and sailed back at night. The Trojans, who saw the horse as a gift of peace, pulled it into the city. At night, the warriors emerged from the horse and opened the city gates to the returning Greeks. Troy was thus taken by surprise and finally conquered.
