Detailed answer to the quiz question

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) is based in Strasbourg, France. It was founded in 1959 and is an institution of the Council of Europe. The ECtHR monitors compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which guarantees fundamental rights and freedoms for people in the 46 member states of the Council of Europe.

If individuals, groups or states believe that their rights under the Convention have been violated, they can apply to the ECtHR, provided that all national remedies have been exhausted. The Court examines the cases and decides whether a violation has actually occurred. Its judgments are binding and aim to strengthen and further develop human rights in Europe.

The imposing ECHR building, designed by British architect Richard Rogers, symbolizes openness and transparency and is located on the banks of the River Ill, not far from the European Parliament.
