In Scottish mythology, seals that come ashore are called selkies. These legendary creatures are transformers who shed their sealskin to live on land as humans. Stories about selkies often tell of mysterious women or men who move back and forth between sea and land. They are considered gentle and mysterious, but their human lives are often marked by tragedy because they have to protect their fur, which preserves their true identity. If the sealskin is stolen or hidden, they cannot return to the sea and are forced to remain in human form. In Scottish folklore, the selkies symbolize the connection between nature, the sea and humans as well as the longing for freedom and home.
