Detailed answer to the quiz question

The Thirty Years’ War, which plunged the European states into a devastating conflict from 1618 to 1648, was brought to an end by the Peace of Westphalia. This treaty, consisting of several individual agreements, was signed in 1648 in the cities of Münster and Osnabrück in Westphalia. The Peace of Westphalia not only brought an end to the Thirty Years’ War between the European powers, but also to the Eighty Years’ War between Spain and the Netherlands.

The treaty regulated far-reaching territorial and political issues and laid the foundations for the modern system of states in Europe. Among other things, it guaranteed religious freedom for the various denominations in the Holy Roman Empire and defined new state borders. It was particularly important that the Peace of Westphalia emphasized the principle of the sovereignty of states and thus created the basis for today’s international law and state order.
