The brief period in which Jane Austen published her best-known works is known as the Regency. It roughly covers the years 1811 to 1820, when Prince Regent George IV officially took over the reins of government from his ailing father, King George III.
The Regency period was characterized by social elegance, a fashionable sense of style and courtly splendour – but also by deep social contrasts.
