Incidentally, the name sparkling wine is derived from the Latin word “siccus”, which means “dry”. Sparkling wine is a sparkling wine with at least ten percent alcohol and consists of a base wine and a dosage (sugar-yeast mixture). The dosage triggers a second fermentation, which produces carbon dioxide that gives the sparkling wine its perlage. The finer the perlage, the more enjoyable it is to drink.
Sparkling wine is available in different quality levels. At the top are French vintage champagnes that have matured for more than 10 years, such as Dom Pérignon. Sparkling wine comes in different flavors, depending on the residual sugar content. The driest sparkling wines are Nature, Extra Brut and Brut, the sweetest Doux and Demi-Sec. The flavor is usually indicated on the label. In Germany, semi-dry and dry sparkling wines are the most popular.
Sparkling wine can be made from different grape varieties that come from different growing regions. However, there are some quality characteristics that determine the origin of the sparkling wine. For example, a vintner’s sparkling wine is a sparkling wine that a vintner produces from his own grapes, usually using the traditional bottle fermentation method. And of course there are also single-vineyard sparkling wines that come from very specific areas, known as vineyards. In the end, however, it’s not what’s on the label that counts, but what’s in the glass and your personal taste.
