The winter month of February

The name “February” comes from Latin and is derived from the word “Februarius.” In the ancient Roman calendar, February was the last month of the year, as the year originally began in March. The Latin word “februare” means “to purify” or “to cleanse.”

The month was associated with purification rituals and sacrifices performed in preparation for the new year. Apparently, these cleansing practices helped to ward off evil spirits and bad karma. Carnival in February is a prime example.

A more modern day this month is Valentine’s Day. Celebrated on February 14th, it celebrates love and affection. It’s customary to give flowers, chocolates, and gifts to loved ones.
