Our solar system is the planetary system in which the Earth is located. It consists of the sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, asteroids and other small bodies that are bound to the sun by its gravitational pull. The solar system is around 4.6 billion years old and is part of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which can sometimes be seen as a bright band in the sky on clear nights. Even in ancient times, people observed the sky and tried to explain the movements of the celestial bodies. The first models of the solar system were geocentric, i.e. they assumed that the earth was at the center and that the sun and planets revolved around it. It was not until the 16th century that the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus introduced the heliocentric model, in which the sun is at the center of the solar system. This model was later developed and refined by Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. Since the launch of the first artificial satellite Sputnik 1 in 1957, man has sent numerous probes, rovers and space stations into space to explore the sun, the planets and their moons. The best-known missions include the Apollo moon landings, the Voyager flights to the outer planets, the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and its moon Titan and the Mars missions with the Mars rovers Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity and Perseverance. The moon was last set foot on by humans in 1973. Since then, exploration of the solar system has stalled somewhat. In culture, on the other hand, we are much further along: since Jules Verne wrote "Journey to the Moon" in the 19th century, the science fiction genre has become one of the most popular in stories, novels and films. Using warp or FTL drives, they escape the troublesome limits of the theory of relativity and fly to alien solar systems.
