In May 1953, the summit of Mount Everest was conquered for the first time. 25 years later, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler scaled the mountain without an oxygen mask, which was another record. Over 8,500 people have already reached the summit of Mount Everest. However, the record-breaking mass tourism around the mountain has led to a number of problems: More than 300 mountain enthusiasts have died on the way there or back. In addition, an enormous amount of garbage is produced.
Other mountains do not have to contend with such problems, but with others. For example, the Brocken, the highest mountain in Saxony-Anhalt, is struggling with fire in the 2022 season due to prolonged drought, the Fichtelberg in Saxony with forest dieback and the Zugspitze in Bavaria with the decline of permafrost.
