Al Capone was one of America’s most notorious gangster bosses. He ruled organized crime in Chicago in the 1920s and made a fortune from the illegal trade in alcohol during Prohibition in the USA. Al Capone was also the inspiration for numerous films, books and songs. One of the most famous films about him is “The Untouchables” from 1987, in which he is played by Robert De Niro. The movie depicts the hunt for Al Capone by federal agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and his group of honest cops who called themselves the Untouchables. The movie is based on true events, such as the Valentine’s Day Massacre, in which Al Capone had his rivals from the North Side Gang murdered.
Al Capone was eventually convicted of tax evasion and had to spend eleven years in prison. He initially served time in the notorious Alcatraz prison, an island off the coast of San Francisco, which was considered the world’s most secure prison. His health deteriorated there due to a syphilis infection he had contracted in his youth. He was later transferred to another prison, where he was pardoned. He died of a heart attack in 1947.
