Nirvana’s second album, released in 1991, was a cultural phenomenon. It sold around 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the world’s best-selling music albums. The band led by Kurt Cobain suddenly became extremely popular and toured the world, being played up and down on the radio and on MTV. The first single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the band’s most successful song.
Kurt Cobain unwillingly became the icon of a generation that vacillated between disinterest and a lack of prospects. The media attention and screaming fans were omnipresent. The lead singer coped badly with this situation. He also suffered from severe stomach pains and soon took drugs to minimize the physical and psychological pain. On April 5, 1994, he was found dead in his home in Seattle. An overdose of heroin and a shot to the head led to his death.
