The fact is: Barbie, who was launched by the toy company Mattel at the New York Toy Fair, has captured the hearts of generations. She is world-famous and even has a 100 percent name recognition rate in Germany, surpassing even Google.
Incidentally, Barbie was invented by Elliot Handler, who was inspired by the comic figure Bild-Lilli from the BILD newspaper and named her after his daughter Barbara. Today, the iconic doll represents 40 different nationalities and is sold in 150 countries.
Over the years, Barbie has not only embodied various professions such as astronaut, teacher or president, but also stands for inclusion. Examples of this include Barbie in a wheelchair and Barbie with Down’s syndrome. However, the change in ideal measurements in 2003 – when a smaller doll with wider hips was introduced – was not really met with enthusiasm by fans. Due to low sales figures, the experiment was ultimately declared a failure and the slim, long-legged version returned to the toy shelves.
