The name comes from the way in which the characters were pressed into clay tablets with a wedge-shaped stylus. It undoubtedly had a major influence on the development of writing worldwide.

This civilization was famous for their wealth and power, especially their control over the trade of gold and ivory in the region. They also had a well-developed administration that enabled them to rule a large empire that stretched across much of southern Africa. We Europeans are not particularly familiar with the name because of our Eurocentric perspective, which is why the question is one of the very difficult ones in this quiz on forgotten cultures.
