Freddy Krueger is the scarred serial killer with the razor-sharp bladed glove. Children and teenagers are defencelessly at his mercy when he haunts them in their dreams: As a sleeping demon who wears a floppy hat and striped sweater – and celebrates his bloody work with diabolical laughter. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” was the name of the 1984 film that made Freddy Krueger the most successful star of horror cinema at the time. In the 1980s , Freddy Krueger’s popularity took on uncanny proportions. Not only did people all over the world flock to the “Nightmare On Elm Street” sequels, which were released almost every year, but they also turned the movie killer into a pop icon: his pizza face was emblazoned on magazines, T-shirts and coffee mugs, and sold like hot cakes in comics, games and merchandise.
Younger audiences were also fascinated by Freddy Krueger, even though they were not allowed to watch the scary and sometimes crude films. The horror movie villain haunted radio plays and could be seen in MTV music videos during the day, while toy stores sold cute plastic Krueger claws. “Every child knows Freddy, he’s as well-known as Santa Claus”, is the line in “New Nightmare”, the seventh part of the long-running series.
The fact that the success of Freddy Krueger would be inconceivable without Robert Englund is considered basic knowledge for our Freddy Krueger quiz: for decades, the theater and TV actor slipped into the costume of the pattering movie killer, giving the character his distinctive voice and mischievous grin. To this day, it seems hard to imagine another star in the role – which is probably the main reason why no further reinterpretations are on the cards.
