Growing up in poor conditions in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s, Baldwin was confronted with racism and social injustice from an early age. These experiences had a decisive influence on his later work. As the child of an unmarried couple and the eldest of nine siblings, Baldwin had to take on responsibility at an early age and assert himself in an environment characterized by poverty and discrimination.
Baldwin made his literary debut in 1953 with the novel “Go Tell It on the Mountain”, a haunting coming-of-age story that was strongly inspired by his own experiences in Harlem. The book was acclaimed by critics and readers alike and established Baldwin as one of the leading voices in African-American literature.
